A cold snap has pushed down low temperatures to most of China, forcing schools and roads to close in several provinces and disrupting rail services.
On Saturday, the National Meteorological Centre issued its first yellow alert for low temperatures this year – the least severe in China’s two-level warning system for cold weather.
It said daily low or average temperatures in some parts of northern China would approach or break records for the same period.
Areas south of the Yangtze River, which have seen less snowfall in recent years, were also affected by the cold snap.
Some cities, including Wuhan and Nanjing, saw their first snow of the winter.
Shanghai residents braced for the cold on Saturday as temperatures dipped to 2 C (35.6 F), after being in the balmy 20s C (68 F) days prior, both unusual for this time of the year.
Local authorities in Shanghai issued a blue cold alert, the lowest in its four-color weather warning system, on Thursday and issued a blue alert for gales the following day.
However, the cold weather cannot stop people from enjoying sports activities.
Dozens of winter swimmers plunged into the icy waters of Beijing's partially frozen Houhai Lake on Saturday - the city's coldest weekend this winter.
China has taken action to cope with a cold wave to ensure the normal life of residents.
Strengthened efforts have been made to inspect the conditions of roads and power infrastructure, and to ensure the safe and smooth operations of transport networks and power grids.
